“It’s all about your determination, I think, as much as anything. There are a lot of people with talent, but it’s the determination.”
– Judy Blume
This reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend a few weeks back. She spoke of her dreams and her undeniable self-sabotage that seemed to follow her every move, setting booby traps as she went, delaying her steps toward her dream’s fruition.
In that moment, while listening to her, I heard my own mind relating, checking off my own recent booby traps, and I remembered what I had realized. The ones that make it, that step out into the world with their dreams under their arm, were the ones that stayed focused.
Of course, relating this inspiring revelation to my friend was easy. Yes, my dear friend, all you need is a little focus.
Thankfully, for my own peace of mind, I tacked on my own failings in staying focused and the multitude of distractions that can dog my day and continually do at times. Phew, because to not have stated my own faults in the stay-focused-department would have been dishonest and misleading.
The truth of it is though, one does need to stay focused, or as Blume puts it: “There are a lot of people with talent, but it’s the determination.”
Yes, indeed.
I have a deadline this coming week, and I’ve been amazed at how often and persistent my brain self-sabotages my every move. The brain has pulled out all the big guns, not really in a blatant let’s-get-mean-kind-of-way but more of a sneaky let’s-get-distracted-kind-of-way.
My own words that I said to my friend have been at the forefront of my mind. Stay focused. No matter what.
That’s what I’ve been doing this week, staying focused, and, really, I’m loving it.
